Top 50 Fantasy Football Players 2009

1. Adrian Peterson RB MIN 9

No surprise here. Good for a TD per game. The only downfall is in PPR leagues.

2. Maurice Jones-Drew RB JAC 7

No Fragile Fred to steal some of the 439 touches that Jacksonville gave to the RBs last year. This is a run first team and with the addition of Tory Holt, there is a true #1 receiver to keep the D honest.

3. LaDainian Tomlinson RB SD 5

I know that LT is the dreaded 30 yrs. old, but a healthy LT promises to pile up the yards and receptions this year. Keep in mind that SD will be looking to finally reach the plateau that has eluded them in years past. A solidified D, a maturing Philip Rivers, and 2 games each against Oak, Den, and KC doesn’t hurt either

4. Matt Forte RB CHI 5

Every sign points to Matt having a stellar sophomore year. Overall touches ranked near the top of the league last year and there is no reason to think that Kevin Jones will steal many of them. Add Jay Cutler to the mix and you have the recipe for an outstanding Fantasy year.

5. Steven Jackson RB STL 9

Ranked high because he is the quintessential dual-threat back. As possibly the ONLY Ram with any value, Jackson, barring injury, could conceivably have 1000 yards rushing AND receiving this year. Injury is ALWAYS a concern however

6. Michael Turner RB ATL 4

2nd year in an offense that surprised everyone last year, and there is no reason for the Falcons to slow down. Plagued by a more difficult schedule this year, it would be easy to think that Turner could take a step back. Matt Ryan and Roddy White only serve to bolster Turner’s value. Draft Mike and expect ate least a couple of 200 yd. games

7. DeAngelo Williams RB CAR 4

A lot of happy Williams owners rode him to FF titles last year. This year could be the same. Although he doesn’t possess the pass catching I would like to see, he is able to rip off a 60 yd. td almost at will.

8. Larry Fitzgerald WR ARI 4

Ahhh Larry! He will be a monster this year- good for 15 TD’s. Hands, size and trust make him a sure-fire 1st rounder!

9. Randy Moss WR NE 8

The best weapon in the best offense in the league. The only question is if he will reach 20 TD’s again. 100 catches and 15-20 TD’s. is guaranteed.

10. Chris Johnson RB TEN 7

When Jeff Fisher says that you are in line for more work, and you are in one of the most prolific running schemes, chances are that you will do well. Johnson’s only real challenge is Lendale “Oprah Diets” White. His potential to catch the ball bumps him up a notch into the 2nd tier of RB’s.

11. Drew Brees QB NO 5

Difficult to argue drafting the top QB in the 1st round. One only has to look at the projected 35-40 TD’s and realize that Drew Brees is a Fantasy goldmine. A healthy Colston and Bush make Brees as sure a thing as there is.

12. Frank Gore RB SF 6

You can depend on a heavy workload in a RB friendly offense. SF is going to HAVE to run the ball to win. The passing game ain’t gonna get it done!

13. Clinton Portis RB WAS 8

Solid and consistent. Not a very sexy pick, but Clinton has the potential and WILL to be more than a serviceable #1 RB. He’s only 28 and will have to be a focal point on a team that has a lot to prove.

14. Andre Johnson WR HOU 10

Love the Andre!!! Only thing that scares me is the fact that Dan Orlovsky WILL take over when Schaub gets hurt. Now, if someone would tell Owen Daniels to simmer down on the td catches, Andre could be this year’s #1 wideout.

15. Brandon Jacobs RB NYG 10

Increased touches due to the departure of quality backups puts Jacobs in the borderline round 1-2 range. Guaranteed touchdowns makes Brandon an extremely intriguing option. The absence of a true #1 WR could hurt or help Jacob’s value. We are betting the latter.

16. Steve Slaton RB HOU 10

Showed great improvement toward the end of last year. As the primary ball carrier in a potential potent offence, Slaton could surprise with double digit TD’s and 5 or so catches per game. You could do far worse at this position

17. Peyton Manning QB IND 6

Lots of uncertainty with the new coaches. One thing remains true – Peyton’s ability to manage a game and find Wayne Clark and Gonzales. Optimism surrounding the running game is unfounded. Peyton is going to have to win a lot of games with his arm.

18. Tom Brady QB NE 8

A little bit low? Maybe, but consider the injury and the fact that Brady hasn’t played a game in nearly a year. Still, with his weapons, Brady could slip this low and turn out to be steal of the draft. The injury scares me, but not enough to not take him with my 2nd pick.

19. Reggie Wayne WR IND 6

No Marvin – No problem! One thing is for certain – the Colts will throw. Who better to grab than the BEST receiver on a predominantly throwing team? Good for 1300 yards and 10 TD’s.

20. Steve Smith WR CAR 4

Still an elite WR and he hasn’t punched a teammate yet – things are looking up for Steve! Anything less than 1500 yards and 9 TD’s. would be a disappointment. Too bad he has to rely on Delhomme!

21. Brian Westbrook RB PHI 4

Injury is a BIG issue here. Training camp injuries could be a blessing though. He will be the feature back in a great offense. He catches the ball and shows up every game. What’s not to like? Oh yak – that durability issue.

22. Greg Jennings WR GB 5

A true beast and a favorite target of one of the up and coming QB’s in the league. 1 year under their belts together should spell fantasy success. Double-digit TD’s is very realistic and 1300 yards is very attainable.

23. Roddy White WR ATL 4

Great last year – now watch him flourish as Tony Gonzales takes some of the pressure off. With a more comfortable Matt Ryan, count on Roddy to light it up this year

24. Terrell Owens WR BUF 9

Wow, how the self professed might have fallen. No on will doubt his ability, but if he can’t make it work with a top tier QB (Romo & McNabb), how is he gonna do with Trent Edwards – ugh!

25. Calvin Johnson WR DET 7

Many have him higher based on his immense talent. I tend to think that the uncertainty at QB will result in a frustrating year in Detroit (what else is new). We all know what happens when you mix a wideout with feelings of frustration!

26. Marques Colston WR NO 5

The run of WR’s continues. Colston is another player you have to love. With a top ranked QB to get him the ball, watch Marq eclipse double digit TD’s.

27. Marion Barber RB DAL 6

A team with lofty expectations HAS to use its best players – MB is it. Although there is plenty of snakes to steal touches, MB will still get his! Look for double digit TD’s and don’t forget about his pass catching ability.

28. Ronnie Brown RB MIA 6

Not shy about his own abilities, Ronnie should prove his worth. With Rasta finally burning out, Brown should get a lot of touches – a recipe for fantasy success.

29. Kurt Warner QB ARI 4

The old man has the best receiving tandem at his disposal, has the love of a marginally attractive wife, and has God personally watching over him. 3rd round is about right – you could do FAR worse.

30. Ryan Grant RB GB 5

A full training camp?? Should do wonders for Ryan.  Fantasy Football: Top 50 Player RankingsAlthough he has quality backups, Grant should receive the bulk of the carries and score close to double digit TD’s.

31. Anquan Boldin WR ARI 4

Can we all just BE HAPPY? Another TRUE talent in a great offense without a great running game should result in plenty of work for Boldin. Play ball AB and all will be fine!

32. Dwayne Bowe WR KC 8

You think he’s happy to have Matt Cassell in town? Bowe is a legitimate #1. Heavily targeted, Bowe should be more-so since the departure of Gonzo. No shame in having Bowe as you 1/2 WR!

33. Aaron Rodgers QB GB 5

One year removed from the Favre shadow, Aaron is ready to emerge as an elite QB. Steady, talented WR’s only bolster his value, and it would not be surprising to see Rogers finish the season as a top 10 fantasy producer.

34. Donovan McNabb QB PHI 4

No more uncertainty for Donovan. Phili has finally made a commitment to McNabb, and he should be able to pay back the fans with a stellar season. With a healthy Curtis and a more experienced Jackson, Don will not be afraid to air it out. Bump him up a few places if Westbrook is healthy.

35. Reggie Bush RB NO 5

No reason why Reggie shouldn’t be able to rule in NO. A rebuilt knee, a fairly easy schedule and oh ya, Drew Brees makes Bush as easy pick at this position. Pierre Thomas could be a concern, but a team that will score 35 per game should be able to get this stud the ball.

36. Marshawn Lynch RB BUF 9

Would be higher if his suspension wasn’t an issue. With TO keeping the D honest, Lynch could benefit, and have a career year. Risky, but the risk might pay off

37. Thomas Jones RB NYJ 9

A gifted runner has found a home in NY. Should get 15-20 touches per game, and that alone puts him in this position.

38. Wes Welker WR NE 8PPR god! As steady a WR as there is. You know what you are gonna get with this guy. The absence of risk and the fact that he WILL get the ball no matter what makes Wes a good (possibly great) ff pickup.

39. Brandon Marshall WR DEN 7

Consensus 1st rounder in February has fallen greatly because of his mouth and his unfortunate situation. Typical WR griping and the fact that he is gonna have to depend on Kyle Orton make BM a risk. However, one still has to love his talent and his desire to go and get the ball.

40. T.J. Houshmandzadeh WR SEA 7

Could become a fantasy darling this year. Seattle loves its possession receivers, and “Bobby Engram on Steroids” is a lock for 100 grabs and his share of TD’s. TJ is gonna love the comraderie that was lacking in Cinci, and could enjoy his best season to date.

41. Philip Rivers QB SD 5

Gotta think he’s gonna be big this year. Tomlinson and Gates were banged up quite a bit of last year and Rivers still threw for 34 TD’s. Healthy team with something to prove in a weak division – you do the math!

42. Pierre Thomas RB NO 5

If this offense does what it should, EVERY Saint can have monster numbers. 12-15 TD’s. is not unreasonable. Believe me people – the Saints are gonna score points!

43. Kevin Smith RB DE 7

Definitely the best player on that team. He will get his touches. Expect 80-100 combined and a td with some great games against the right matchup. Good value at the end of the 4th round.

44. Antonio Bryant WR TB 8

Has all the tools to become an elite talent – QB situation – not good. If you are a Bucs fan – grab him here, play the matchup and GOOD LUCK!!!

45. Jason Witten TE DAL 6

The fact the he will bet better #’s than most #1 Wideouts puts Witten solidly in the 4th round. 900 yards. and maybe 10 TD’s. Is attainable now that TO is out of the equation. The dude is a FOOTBALL PLAYER and a pleasure to own!

45. Roy Williams WR DA 6

No idea why he’s here. Remember when he was drafted in round 2 or 3 on a terrible team – why is he round 4 or 5 on a better team?

46. Antonio Gates TE SD 5

Another 900 yards. and probably 10 TD’s? Thank you very much. If healthy, Gates is a beauty. When you see your opponent getting 40yds from his TE and your getting 80 and a TD, you will be happy you drafted him here.

47. Tony Gonzalez TE ATL 4

Poised to be a solidifying presence in an up and coming offense, Gonzo brings talent rarely seen at the TE position to Atlanta. Could be a monster year – might be fun to watch.

48. Tony Romo QB DA 6

Still a good bet to have a good season. Surprising he fell so far. Still has some potent weapons and the Cowboys will not settle for losing games. Romo is a gamer and 25 TD’s should be a lock.

49. Joseph Addai RB IN 6

Starting RB in a good offence! Enough said!

50. Larry Johnson RB KC 8

Could go either way. Has the potential to rush for 1500 yards and 15 TD’s but he also has the potential go be another Shaun Alexander! I think Cassell gives that team a swagger and LJ will be getting his.

Top 10 Defenses in Fantasy Football 2009

Where do the New York Jets defense fall in the list of top fantasy teams?

Where do the New York Jets' defense fall in the list of top fantasy teams?

  1. Pittsburgh Steelers – Led by the dynamic linebacking duo of James Harrison and James Farrior, and a top-notch defensive backfield including safety Troy Polamalu, the Steelers had the NFL’s top defense in 2008. No other team allowed fewer points or yards per game. This version of the Steel Curtain also finished second in the league in sacks and tied for sixth in interceptions. The Super Bowl champs will continue to dominate their offensive opposition, especially in the mediocre AFC North. Fantasy owners should expect the Steelers to be the first defensive unit selected in most drafts. (Bye: Week 8)
  2. New York Giants – The Giants finished ninth among fantasy defenses on NFL.com last season, and the overall value of this unit is clearly on the rise. LB Antonio Pierce is New York’s top tackler, and DE Justin Tuck is one of the NFL’s top sack specialists. The return of DEs Osi Umenyiora and Mathias Kiwanuka from injuries will improve the team’s pass rush, which had 42 sacks in 2008. The Giants also added talented defenders such as DT Rocky Bernard, LB Michael Boley, and DE Chris Canty, so they will be deeper and even more formidable. Fantasy owners should love this unit in 2009. (Bye: Week 10)
  3. Minnesota Vikings – A consistent fantasy option, Minnesota has finished in the top seven among defenses on NFL.com in each of the last three seasons. In 2008, the Vikings ranked fourth in the league in sacks, in large part because of DE Jared Allen, and they finished second in forced fumbles. They were first against the run for the third consecutive season, as the Williams Wall (DTs Kevin and Pat) continued to make life difficult for opposing runners. This aggressive unit also has averaged 6 TDs per year since 2005. The Vikings are almost certain to be one of the first defenses taken in drafts. (Bye: Week 9)
  4. Baltimore Ravens – One of the most ferocious defensive units in the league, the Ravens will have a new look in 2009. Former coordinator Rex Ryan took the head coaching job with the New York Jets, and several players have departed via free agency or release. This team still has several stars, however, including linebacker Ray Lewis, defensive end Terrell Suggs, safety Ed Reed, and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, so the new coordinator, Greg Mattison, won’t be short on talent. While a decrease in fantasy points should be expected, the Ravens are still a top-notch defensive unit. (Bye: Week 7)
  5. Dallas Cowboys – The Cowboys led the NFL with 59 sacks last season, but they still failed to finish in the top 10 in fantasy points on NFL.com. However, they were more productive down the stretch after coach Wade Phillips took over the play calling. In fact, the Cowboys scored double-digit fantasy points in five of their final six games. New additions such as LB Keith Brooking, DE Igor Olshansky, and S Gerald Sensabaugh should fortify this unit. With stars like LBs DeMarcus Ware and Bradie James also on the roster, the Cowboys have become a more attractive option in fantasy leagues. (Bye: Week 6)

If you are not able to get any of these defenses…

6.San Diego Chargers

7.New York Jets

8.Tennessee Titans

9.New England Patriots

10.Chicago Bears

Top 10 Kickers in Fantasy Football 2009

Where does Ryan Longwell fall in terms of the best kickers in fantasy football?

Where does Ryan Longwell fall in terms of the best kickers in fantasy football?

1.Stephen Gostkowski (New England) – He was on fire last year and almost average 10 points a game for his fantasy owners. To give you some comparison only 7 wide receivers averaged more points than Gostkowski and Gostkowski led the league in 2008 with 36 field goals. With Tom Brady back behind center and a hungry Randy Moss, you know Stephen will get his chances and I’ll bet on him cashing them in.

2. Ryan Longwell (Minnesota) – He is good long making the most of his 50+ FG opportunities last year hitting 6 out 6 chances. I like this kicker to surpass Gostkowski in points possibly this year, especially if the Vikings remain in QB limbo and keep producing the numerous field goal opportunities for Longwell.

3. David Akers (Philadelphia) – Akers is a very good consistent kicker that put up great numbers in 2008 and finished just below Gostkowski in average points per game with 9.3. Although he doesn’t have the leg of Longwell, something in Philly is bound to go wrong and the offense will give Akers plenty of opportunities along the way to make him worth a Top 5 pick in 2009.

4. Nate Kaeding (San Diego) – Kaeding possesses a strong, accurate leg and plays in an offense that allows him opportunities to produce. He had a nice season in 2008, posting career highs in both field goals (27) and attempts (32), but he was also inconsistent. In fact, he scored 6 or fewer fantasy points on NFL.com six times. Still, Kaeding has averaged a respectable 134 fantasy points over the last three seasons and remains a viable starter in most leagues. The Chargers should continue to score points, so look for Kaeding to produce good — but not great — numbers in 2009.

5. Mason Crosby (Green Bay) – Crosby, who led all kickers in points in his rookie season of 2007, had another productive season in 2008. He made close to 80 percent of his field-goal attempts, including an impressive 8 from 40-plus yards. He also scored double-digit fantasy points in 9 of his 16 games — including a five-game stretch in which he averaged 11.4 points — so he has proved to be consistent as well. In an offense that should continue to put up points, Crosby remains a valuable asset in fantasy leagues. He’ll be one of the first five kickers selected in most drafts. (Bye: Week 5)

Some other kickers that are pretty good…

6. Rob Bironas

7. Neil Rackers

8. Jason Elam

9. Ryan Longwell

10. John Carney

Top 10 Fantasy Football Tight Ends 2009

  1. Jason Witten – Witten put up monster numbers last year at the Tight End position for the Dallas Cowboys hauling in 35 passes for a total of 442 yards in the first have weeks. With Terrell Owens out of Dallas and Romo coming back healthy, Witten should have numbers that match his 2007 season. Bye Week 6
  2. Antonio Gates – The only problem with drafting Antonio Gates so high is the fact that he is injury prone. He was the best tight end from 2004 to 2007 and was drafted around the 3rd or 4th round. With the development of Phillip Rivers, look for Gates to act as a big target throughout the year. Bye: Week 5
  3. Tony Gonzalez – Last year, Tony Gonzalez exploded with Tyler Thigpen at quarterback. In his final 11 games with Kansas City, he caught 75 passes for 865 yards and a total of 8 touchdowns. He had better numbers than Gates and Witten during that same time. This year he will be a very important target for young quarterback Matt Ryan. Bye: Week 4
  4. Dallas Clark – Last year Clark had solid numbers for a tight end, hauling in 77 receptions for 848 yards while scoring 6 touchdowns. He has always been an attractive option because his Quarterback is Peyton Manning. Expect Clark to come off the board in the middle rounds. Bye: Week 6
  5. Chris Cooley- Cooley comes in at number 5 because of his consistency over the last four years. He posted 83 catches for 849 yards while scoring just one touch down. Although he had just 79 fantasy points, he is looking for a major rebound this season. Bye: Week 8

If you couldn’t get any of these Tight Ends…

6. Greg Olsen

7. Owen Daniels

8. Kellen Winslow Jr.

9. Zach Miller

10. Kevin Boss

Top Fantasy Football Wide Recievers 2009

Where does Randy Moss fall in between all the other Wide Recievers?

Where does Randy Moss fall in between all the other Wide Recievers?

1.  Larry Fitzgerald- Fitzgerald is probably the most athletically talented wide receiver in the NFL. His talents and skills came forefront in the Cardinals’ playoff run. With Kurt Warner as his quarterback and Anquan Boldin on the opposite side of the field, Fitzgerald is positioned to post solid fantasy numbers week in and week out. The Cardinals will continue to throw the football a ton, thus making Fitzgerald one of the best wide receivers in Fantasy. He will probably be picked up in the late first round in some leagues but mostly a second round pick. Bye: Week 4

2.  Randy Moss- Moss’ value fell last year after Tom Brady’s injury. However, with Brady coming back this year, it is not out of question that Moss has the potential to be the best wide receiver in fantasy. Last year, Moss was able to finish with a respectable 14 touchdowns with Matt Cassel as his Quarterback. Although Moss and Brady will not put up the same numbers as they did two seasons ago, watch from them to rebound and put up respectable numbers. Bye: Week 8

3.  Andre Johnson – Andre Johnson surprised fantasy owners last year by getting  115 receptions for 1575 yards and 8 touchdowns. As a strong receiver he had 8 100 yard games and caught more than 7 passes in a game 10 times last year. He has big fantasy upside, if Matt Schaub is healthy this season. Bye: Week 10

4.  Steve Smith – Smith is one of the most underrated wide receivers in the NFL. Despite missing the first two games last year due to team suspension, Smith had 1421 yards but found the end zone only six times last year. If he is able to stay healthy this year, he can complement the Panthers run game very well and become one of the best fantasy players. Bye: Week 4

5.  Calvin Johnson – Calvin Johnson was able to put up monster numbers for the horrid winless Detroit Lions. He was to rack up 1331 yards as well as getting 12 touchdowns, all while battling double teams. This year he will have a stable quarterback in first pick Matthew Stafford. His production for the 2009 year is up in the air, majorly depending on Stafford’s performance. Bye: Week 7

6.  Reggie Wayne – Wayne has been a stable pick for fantasy owners. His numbers should rebound this year as he has one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Peyton Manning and is his primary target. Watch for very solid numbers from Reggie Wayne. Bye: Week 6

7.  Roddy White – White has been able to post over 1000 yards for the last two years in Atlanta. With Matt Ryan under center, he was able to produce 7 100 yard games. He interestingly enough had more points that Randy Moss or T.O. last year. The addition of Tony Gonzalez and the presence of Michael Turner should help to ease the pressure off White. Bye: Week 4

8.  Anquan Boldin – Boldin is one of the best fantasy wide receivers just because of his position on the Cardinals. He is in a primarily pass friendly team and lines up across from the best wide receiver in football. When Fitzgerald is double teamed, most of the passes should be directed towards Boldin boosting his yards. If you can get both Boldin and Fitzgerald, consider yourself one of the luckiest owners in fantasy football. Bye: Week 4

9.  Dwayne Bowe –  Bowe is just waiting for a breakout season. The addition of Matt Cassel should help Bowe’s fantasy value. Todd Haley’s playbook should also use Bowe as a major playmaker in the Chief’s playbook. Bye: Week 8

10.  Wes Welker – Welker has established as one of the best fantasy options in fantasy leagues. He has averaged 111.5 catches and 1170 yards in two years with the Patriots and with Tom Brady coming back, his numbers should just become better. Bye: Week 8

I am pretty sure you will need other wide recievers…

11. Greg Jennings

12. Chad Ochocinco

13. Roy Williams

14. Terrell Owens

15. Brandon Marshall

16. Marquez Colston

17. T.J. Houshmandzadeh

18. Anthony Gonzalez

19. Vincent Jackson

20. DeSean Jackson

Top Running Backs in Fantasy Football 2009

Where Did LT fall in our Standings?

Where Did LT fall in our Standings?

1. Adrian Peterson – The top fantasy player, no doubt.. A powerful and elusive athlete, he led all backs in rushing yards last season and finished third in fantasy points at his position. Peterson rushed for more than 100 yards for 10 games and the number of carries has increased since last year. Look for his numbers to get better this season. Peterson will be the consensus No. 1 overall selection in fantasy drafts. (Bye: Week 9)

2. Michael Turner- After five seasons in San Diego backing up LaDainian Tomlinson, Micheal “The Burner” Turner proved himself as a top back in 2008, as he finished with 1699 rushing yards and 17 td’s. He was a big presence in the red zone and was able to run for 100 yards, eight times last year which included two games with over 200 yards. He carried the ball 376 times but expect that to decrease because of the arrival of Tony Gonzalez at the Tight End position. One of the few featured backs left in the league, Turner is a top-five pick for 2009. (Bye: Week 4)

3. Matt Forte – Forté was the best rookie runner last year. A versatile back with a nose for the end zone, he caught 63 passes while rushing for 1238 yards as well as scoring 12 touchdowns. With Jay Cutler coming from Chicago, Forte will be more productive as a catching running back this season. The upgrade of Orlando Pace at the tackle position, will also boost the production for Forte.(Bye: Week 5)

4. Maurice Jones-Drew- If you want a running back who is yearning for a breakout year, then look at Jones- Drew who now has the Jacksonville runningback position all to himself after the departure of Fred Taylor. This means that Jones-Drew will get most of the carries and will be a threat out of the backfield not only by running the ball but also as a receiver. (Bye: Week 7)

5. Chris Johnson- A versatile running back with good speed, Chris Johnson had a productive 2008 with 43 receptions, 1,488 yards from scrimmage, and 10 total touchdowns. He did this all at the same time as sharing the workload with LenDale White. Watch for his number of carries to increase this year. (Bye: Week 7)

6. LaDainian Tomlinson – I am going to against what all the other fantasy experts say about this guy. LaDainian Tomlinson has still got the magic that made him one of the elite running backs in the league. Everyone says he had a down year, but they do not look at the fact that he had turf toe and an injured groin. Look for Tomlinson to bounce back from a down year by his standards and prove his critics wrong. He could still be counted as a number 1 back but will lose some carries to Darren Sproles. (Bye: Week 5)

7. DeAngelo Williams – Rated as the second-most valuable fantasy back on his own team entering 2008, Williams held off rookie Jonathan Stewart and had 1,515 rushing yards and made 20 touchdowns. He scored at least 1 TD in 10 of the last 12 games, which includes 2 games with 4 touchdowns. Williams will obviously not put up the same monster numbers this year, but he’s still a surefire first-round pick. (Bye: Week 4)

8. Brandon Jacobs – Last Year Brandon Jacobs ran for 1,089 yards and an impressive 15 TDs in just 13 games. He will have a greater role in the Giants’ offensive scheme without Derrick Ward but Ahmad Bradshaw to back him should be healthy for most of the season unlike the last few years. Although he may be a gamble at this point, Jacobs should produce solid numbers as a number 2 back. (Bye: Week 10)

9. Steven Jackson – Many other fantasy analysts have Jackson higher on their boards, but unless Jackson can come out of the picture of a bust in my mind, I will play it safe and draft Steven Jackson later. He is a very talented player and new coach Steve Spangnuolo’s playbook should make Jackson a primary target in the Rams offense. There’s no reason to believe he can’t put up big numbers but I still have some doubts. Look for him to come off the board in the first round in both standard and PPR drafts. (Bye: Week 9)

10. Frank Gore – Drafting Frank Gore in the last two season has been a very big gamble. The number of games he has played, number of carries and rushing yards have all decreased each of last 2 yards. Yet with a new coaching staff, it looks like Gore should get at least 20 carries a week. The addition of Moran Norris should also help to bring up Gore’s fantasy value. (Bye: Week 6)

If you need a number 2 back or couldn’t get two of these players in your first two rounds you may want to try…

11. Marion Barber
12. Steve Slaton
13. Ronnie Brown
14. Clinton Portis
15. Brian Westbrook

Top 10 Quarterbacks in Fantasy Football for the 2009-2010 Football Year

Drew Brees is expected to be the top fantasy quarterback next year

Drew Brees is expected to be the top fantasy quarterback next year

1.   Drew Brees – It is probably the safest pick at Quarterback. He will have Marques Colston, Reggie Bush, and Jeremy Shockey all healthy and this guy passed for 5,069 yards-just 15 yards short of Dan Marino’s NFL single-season record-and a career-best 34 touchdowns. He passed for 300-plus yards 10 times and tossed multiple touchdowns 11 times. The Saints will remain a pass-heavy offense, so Brees’ statistical success should continue in 2009. He is worth a first- or second-round selection in fantasy drafts. (Bye: Week 5)

2.  Peyton Manning- This would normally be taken up by Tom Brady but I don’t know if he can put up the same numbers as he did in the season before he got injured. Peyton Manning on the other hand is coming off a season with 4,002 passing yards and 28 total TDs, and those numbers where a disappointment compared to his other seasons. He started the season cold but really started to air it out in the last 13 games of the season. Manning will still be the top offensive threat in the Jim Caldwell playbook. Watch for Manning to throw for more than 4000 years as well as around 30-40 Touchdowns this season. (Bye: Week 6)

3.   Tom Brady – Well the big question with this pick is how Tom Brady will respond after his surgery. Brady should remain one of the top players in fantasy with Randy Moss and Wes Welker as his receivers .  His predictions for this year are similar to Manning; 4000 yards passing with about 30 touchdowns (Bye: Week 8)

4.  Phillip Rivers – Phillip Rivers made himself a dominant fantasy force last year when he threw just over 4000 yards and 34 touchdowns. The upside about Rivers is that his production was mostly even throughout the season. With LaDainian Tomlinson in the downside of his career and Darren Sproles used primarily for screens, Rivers could put up similar numbers this season. Because running backs and wide receivers will dominate the first three rounds, Rivers should be targeted in Rounds 4 to 5 in most drafts. If you can get Phillip Rivers after you pick up your running backs, you may have stolen one of the best gems in the draft. (Bye: Week 5)

5.  Kurt Warner – He has one of the best receiving cores in the NFL. Period. He has two of the elite wide receivers in the football and will capitalize on their presence. Watch for Warner to throw near 4500 years and about 25 touchdowns. If he falls into the middle rounds, it is your lucky day(Bye: Week 4)

6.  Donavan McNabb – McNabb is coming off a roller coaster season that saw him open with a three-touchdown performance against the Rams, then get benched and then lead the Eagles to the NFC Championship. He finished with a career high 3,916 passing yards and his second-highest touchdown total. But McNabb loses some of his fantasy luster in his lack of consistent production and due to his injury prone career, as he threw for multiple touchdowns in just 44 percent of his starts. Still, McNabb has an improved core of receivers with the development of DeSean Jackson and the addition of Micheal Vick will probably help his value. Look to draft McNabb in the middle rounds. (Bye: Week 4)

7.  Aaron Rodgers – After being Brett Farve’s backup for three years, Rodgers took the reins of the Packers’ offense in 2008 and became a superior fantasy quarterback. He was able to pass for 4038 yards and 28 touchdowns.  He also led all quarterbacks with 4 rushing TDs. Only Drew Brees and Philip Rivers scored more fantasy points  among Quarterbacks last year. With a talented wide receivers that include Greg Jennings and Donald Driver,  Aaron Rodgers should have a solid season as the Packers’ Quarterback. (Bye: Week 5)

8.  Matt Ryan – As the 2008 Offensive Rookie of the Year, Matt Ryan had many weapons around him to help him lead the Falcons to the Super Bowl. The addition of Tony Gonzalez should help to boost his numbers. This year, defenses will also probably pay more attention to one of the best running backs in fantasy football, Micheal Turner, helping Ryan to be more effective. A No. 1 fantasy quarterback, he’ll come off the board in the middle rounds on Draft Day. (Bye: Week 4)

9.  Tony Romo – Theabsence of wide receiver Terrell Owens is almost certain to decrease Romo’s fantasy value. With a talented trio of backs in Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice, the Cowboys are expected to run the ball more often this season. Tony Romo will still have opportunities to produce, but it’s hard to expect him to record monster numbers that some expect from him. Fantasy leaguers should still consider Romo a No. 1 quarterback in all formats but they should keep within lower expectations. (Bye: Week 6)

10.  Jay Cutler – One of the most talented young quarterbacks in the NFL, Jay Cutler had a breakout 2008 season with 4,526 yards and 27 total touchdowns. His success was due in large part to a strong wide receiving corps which included Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal. However, a trade that sent him to the Bears almost guarantees a fall in most statistical categories. Cutler has fewer weapons in his new pass attack – his No. 1 wide receiver is Devin Hester, a converted defensive back — and the Bears won’t turn into a pass-laden team with the talented Matt Forte in the backfield. Fantasy owners should still consider Cutler a No. 1 quarterback, but he’s no longer an elite option at his position. (Bye:Week 5)

Jason Giambi to ink a minor-league deal with the Colorado Rockies

Jason Giambi will get the opportunity to claim that role. Giambi is ready to join Triple-A Colorado Springs where he will be given regular at-bats with the idea of being activated by the Rockies when the active rosters expand to 40 players on Sept. 1, according to a major-league source.

Giambi, 38, a former AL MVP with Oakland, was released by Oakland on Aug. 7 after hitting .193 in 83 games for the A’s. He reached the 400 home run plateau earlier in the season.

Originally signed by the A’s, Giambi had gone to the Yankees as a free agent, and played in New York for seven years before returning to Oakland this year.

Earlier in the season the Rockies attempted to address the veteran-off-the-bench role with Tony Clark, who was released by Arizona. Clark, however, balked at reporting to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger rests Achilles tendon injury

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger won’t play in Saturday night’s preseason game because of an Achilles’ tendon injury, but league sources told NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora that it isn’t serious. Roethlisberger, who was hurt Thursday when left tackle Max Starks stepped on the quarterback’s foot, underwent tests, which showed no significant damage, La Canfora reports. Roethlisberger traveled with the team to Washington for the preseason game against the Redskins, but the Steelers placed him on the inactive list. Charlie Batch started at quarterback in Roethlisberger’s place. Left guard Chris Kemoeatu also missed the game with a rib injury.

Cardinals starting pitcher Kyle Loshe on the 15-day disabled list

SAN DIEGO — The Cardinals placed Kyle Lohse on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin on Saturday and recalled Mitchell Boggs from Triple-A Memphis to take Lohse’s roster spot. It’s the second DL stint of the year for Lohse, who had never previously been on the disabled list in his Major League career.

The club believes Lohse’s injury is relatively mild and hopes that he won’t be sidelined for more than 10-15 days — though of course he can’t return to the active roster for at least 15. Lohse suffered the injury when he was running to first base on a single during Friday night’s 4-0 Cardinals loss to the Padres.

The Cards have yet to announce who will take Lohse’s spot in the starting rotation, though they don’t have to decide right away. Following Monday’s off-day, Chris Carpenter can pitch on regular rest Thursday and John Smoltz can pitch on Friday, so the fifth spot wouldn’t come up until Aug. 29 at home against the Nationals.

“We [announced Adam] Wainwright and [Joel] Pineiro, and then we’ll hold on Thursday,” manager Tony La Russa said. “We’ll just see how it goes — see if we want to bring Carp back on time or give him an extra day. … What Lohse being out means is that we’re back to examining all the alternatives.”

Boggs is certainly one candidate to start, as is Brad Thompson. The club would lean against pitching rookie Blake Hawksworth.

“If you had to drag it out of me, my opinion is that we more need the reliever than we do the starter in that spot,” La Russa said.

Portland Trail Blazers sign Dante Cunningham

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Trail Blazers signed rookie forward Dante Cunningham to a multi-year contract, it was announced today by General Manager Kevin Pritchard. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“We are really excited about the versatility and determination Dante brings to our team,” said Pritchard. “Dante had a great summer league and we believe he has the potential to become a very good player in this league.”

Selected by the Trail Blazers with the 33rd overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, Cunningham led Portland’s 2009 NBA Summer League entry with 18.3 points to go with a team second-best 5.8 rebounds and 1.50 steals in four games (all starts).

“I am so grateful and happy to be a Trail Blazer,” said Cunningham. “This is a dream come true and I can’t wait to get to work with my teammates. I’m looking forward to moving to Portland and helping this team in any way that I can.”

Cunningham, 22, played in a school-record 139 games during his four-year career at Villanova and is one of six players in school history to reach 1,300 points and 800 rebounds. The 6-8, 230-pound Maryland native finished his collegiate career with averages of 9.6 points (52.4% FG), 5.9 rebounds and 1.17 steals.

Boston Red Sox crush the New York Yankees, 14-1

BOSTON — For one sparkling Saturday afternoon at Fenway, all the inconsistencies that had plagued the Red Sox since the All-Star break vanished from memory. The recent frustration was replaced by clinical precision on both sides of the ball, resulting in a near-flawless 14-1 romp over the Yankees.

On the heels of a 20-11 blowout loss on Friday night — not to mention five consecutive defeats to their rivals — the Red Sox turned the tables in the most resounding of ways.

“Good teams let things go quickly — they just move on and play the next day,” said Kevin Youkilis, who belted two homers and drove in six runs. “You don’t worry about what happened the night before. If you do, you’re going to find yourself going downhill quick.”

The bats — led by Youkilis and a host of other heroes — belted A.J. Burnett around the yard.

“Youk was awesome,” said Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia. “That’s why he’s one of the best. We scored some runs early and kept going.”

Meanwhile, from the mound, Junichi Tazawa belied his youth (23 years old) and lack of professional experience (none before this season) by firing six shutout innings en route to his second Major League win. Tazawa scattered eight hits, walking two and striking out two.

“Like I told you guys, when we get our pitching stopping their offense, things are going to happen. That’s what happened today,” said Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, who pummeled home run No. 20 on the season, a line shot over the Monster.

Micheal Vick to make Eagles debut on Thursday

PHILADELPHIA — Michael Vick will make his Philadelphia Eagles debut Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars if all goes well over the next three days of practice, coach Andy Reid said Saturday.

“I think there is a chance of that,” Reid said. “Right now that’s the plan. But we’ll see how it goes.”

Vick signed with the Eagles on Aug. 13 but wasn’t allowed to play in the team’s first two preseason games under the provisions of his suspension from the NFL.

Vick has worked the majority of his time at quarterback. If he does play Thursday, he would share time with starter Donovan McNabb and backup Kevin Kolb, who is coming back from a knee injury.

“I want to see how he does this week,” Reid said of Vick. “He worked throughout the week here as we went to the game (in Indianapolis). He did a couple of workouts here and was here yesterday on the players’ day off and worked hard. He’s getting through that soreness, and we’ll just see how it goes for this week as he goes through practice.”

Vick has spent extra time on his own working with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and quarterbacks coach James Urban.

“I think everybody is (anxious), including most of all himself,” Reid said. “I think he wants to get in and play again. I can’t tell you right now how much he is going to play. But he’s shooting to play this game.

Miami Dolphins’ Sean Smith and Jason Allen being tested for swine flu

Miami Dolphins defensive backs Sean Smith and Jason Allen were scratched from Saturday night’s preseason game against the Carolina Panthers after coming down with flu-like symptoms and undergoing tests. Sources close to the situation told NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora that they don’t believe either player has swine flu, as some reports have said. The Dolphins aren’t saying much, but a representative told La Canfora that two players are sick and being tested for swine flu. However, results aren’t known at this point, and it generally take 48 hours for swine-flu tests. When those results are in, the Dolphins will not release them, given the personal nature of such information. Smith’s agent, David Canter, said his client already was feeling better and planning to take part in the Dolphins’ next practice Monday. “I was with Sean no more than two hours ago,” Canter said. “He seems better, and he’s good to go.” Smith was replaced at cornerback by fellow rookie Vontae Davis. Allen is a backup safety.

Drew Stubbs walks it off with a home run for the Cincinnati Reds

CINCINNATI — Drew Stubbs blasted a solo home run to left field in the top of the 10th to give the Reds a 2-1 win over the Giants on Thursday. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for Cincinnati.

Stubbs, who was 0-for-4 entering that at-bat, hit his first career home run on a 2-0 count against Giants reliever Bob Howry.

The game had been tied at 1 since the sixth.

The Giants started the scoring in the fourth off Reds starter Aaron Harang. Juan Uribe walked to start the inning. Then Nate Schierholtz singled to center to put runners on first and second. After a fly out by Pablo Sandoval, Randy Winn also singled to load the bases. Harang looked as if he’d escape after he struck out Ryan Garko, but a wild pitch when facing Aaron Rowand scored a run for the Giants.

The Reds ended their 19-inning scoreless streak when Laynce Nix homered to center field to tie the game.

Larry Fitzgerald restructures his contract

Larry Fitzgerald has restructured his contract to help the team create some extra salary cap room. Fitz was reluctant to talk much about it – he isn’t a guy who likes having his business out there for public consumption – but he said he felt it was something he should do. He also mentioned Anquan Boldin’s situation.

“Guys that are elite players in the business, they have to sacrifice,” Fitzgerald said. “I know my fellow guy Q, he is in a position he doesn’t want to be in and I just want to see him happy. We talked about it when we moved into the new stadium, I remember in a preseason game talking with him about the Ring of Honor and how nice it would be to both have our names up there one day.”

The move does free cap space – it has to do with incentives Fitzgerald might earn this year, which under the old pact would have immediately taken up cap space if reached – but it doesn’t necessarily mean anything is immediately on the horizon in terms of a new Boldin deal, or even that the space is intended for Boldin.

“I volunteered,” Fitzgerald said. “I told them if they needed something I wouldn’t hesitate. They said they needed it.”

Rain thwarts Ireland, Scotland take first-innings points

Rain came to Scotland’s rescue on the final day of their ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Ireland in Aberdeen, ensuring that play was washed out and the hosts won first-innings points even though they were likely to be defeated had the weather stayed clear at Mannofield Park.

The advantage was with Ireland at the end of the third day with Scotland on 72 for 5, needing another 226 runs with only the lower half of their batting order left. But heavy overnight showers and then some more this morning forced play to be delayed at first and finally abandoned at 2.42 pm.

Scotland and Ireland claim three points each from the draw while the hosts gained another six because of a six-run first-innings lead.

Canada crushes Kenya in first one-day international

A brilliant spell of bowling from Khurram Chohan dismissed the heart of the powerful batting line up that had made hay with the canadian bowling only days before, as Kenya slumped to 113 all out. Chohan took 4/26, and was well supported by Osinde, Baidwan and Cheema who each took two wickets. A typically aggressive innings from Cheema gave Canada a comprehensive win.

Canada won the toss and opted to field, hoping to take advantage of early movement from a slightly damp pitch. . The Canadian team was Rizwan Cheema, H Patel, S Jyoti, A Bagai*†, AM Samad, ZE Surkari, S Dhaniram, S Keshvani, Khurram Chohan, HS Baidwan, and H Osinde.

Osinde and Chohan started off with consecutive maidens, and Osinde made the first breakthrough in the 5th over, having Obuya lbw for 2. Chohan yorked Obanda in the next over, and two balls later bowled Tikolo – who had made 327 runs in the 4-day match – leaving Kenya reeling at 22/3. Waters, who had also made a big century in the 4-day match was next to go giving Chohan his 3rd wicket- all bowled; 26/4. The ball was moving off the seam, and in the air, and both opening bowlers were proving a handful. The fifth wicket went down on 37, when Chohan failed to hit the stumps- but only because the ball hit the pad first- Obuya lbw for 6, and Chohan 4/14. The first change of bowling brought immediate results as Baidwan won an lbw decision with his first ball, 6 wickets down for 48, all lbw or bowled. Baidwan hit the stumps again to dismiss Kamande, but Varaiya broke the sequence when he hit Cheema to mid-off for the 8th wicket (67/8). Odhiambo was dropped by Cheema, but when Osinde returned to the attack was bowled, after putting on 27 with Ouma (94/9). Ouma and Ongondo took the total past three figures before a fine catch by Bagai finished off the innings. Ouma remained unbeaten on 43, and the innings only lasted 33.1 overs.

Under 19 star Hiral Patel was sent out to open with Cheema and played out the first over without scoring. Cheema got off the mark from his first ball with a six smashed over mid-on, and followed that up with two more boundaries in the next over. A single took him to the other end, where the first two balls of the fourth over were deposited far over long on – 27 off 10 balls and the Kenyan total started to look less than adequate. Patel, perhaps trying to emulate his partner, tried to hit over mid-off and was caught- 39/1 in the 5th over. Cheema continued in his usual style and clubbed another four to reach 50 in just 24 balls- probably a Canadian record, based on CricInfo’s list of fastest fifties. Canada failed in their attempt to win the match before the lunch break, going in at 73/1 off 10 overs, Cheema 56*. It took 6 more overs to pass the Kenyan total by which time Cheema had advanced to 76* from 38 balls, accompanied by Samad (30*). He finished the match with his fourth six.
